Uninsured Motorist Insurance
Most people carry minimal coverage, and that’s not enough.
Estimates over the last few years say that between 10% and 15% of people have no coverage, and roughly 40% have minimal coverage – meaning that roughly half of the drivers on the road have either no coverage or the minimum amount of coverage. This can add stress to the already stressful situation of a car wreck. At Kilburn Landry Law, we help people get the justice they deserve after a wreck. But we also help people prepare in case a wreck happens.
Louisiana Insurance Requirements

In Louisiana, everyone who owns a car is required to have liability insurance coverage, that covers them in case of a wreck that causes damage or injury to someone else.
The minimum required amount of insurance is called 15/30/25 – where the insurance company agrees to pay up to $15,000 per person who is injured, $30,000 per wreck for injury no matter how many people are injured, and $25,000 per wreck for property damage.
If you get injured in a wreck, and take an ambulance to the hospital, the bills just for going to the hospital could be more than $5,000. The ambulance and hospital may not take your health insurance, leaving you to foot the whole bill.
If you need more treatment, $15,000 per person for injury can barely be enough to cover your medical bills, let alone the other kinds of damages you suffer.
That’s where uninsured motorist coverage comes in.
What is Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage and How Do I Get It?
Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is an option you can add on your own policy. It provides coverage to you in case another driver causes a wreck, and either does not have insurance, or does not have enough insurance to cover all of your damages.
Many people do not remember being offered UM/UIM coverage. In Louisiana, insurance agents have to offer it to you to either accept or reject it, but too many people either skip over it, or decide not to add it. You are supposed to be shown a form that gives you the following options:

By choosing to add UM coverage, you will pay a little more per month, but your insurance agent may not tell you that UM coverage is relatively cheap – often costing only three to five percent (3% -5%) of your overall insurance bill.
At Kilburn Landry Law, we urge our clients to purchase UMBI, because it provides the best coverage available.
